Receive God's Warm Love Through Reflection

The sacrament of baptism

on January 14, 2013

“Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heavensaid, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”” -Matthew 3:13-17

This Sunday, we celebrated the feast of Jesus’ baptism.

Baptism is more than just a cleansing, a kind of forgiveness; baptism is also a new bond between each of us and God. Baptism symbolizes our commitment as a new Christian to follow Jesus. And it’s also a commitment from God; He’s labeled you as one of His children, and He’s there to watch over you as you grow in your journey. We are saved and marked as a Christian when we are first baptized into the church, and from that point forward, we need to live out our lives each day as a Christian.

Jesus shows us the beautiful sacrament of baptism when he allowed John to baptism him. He was without sin to begin with, so it was more than just a forgiveness of sin and renewal. In his baptism, Jesus has accepted his fate and demonstrates his commitment to do God’s will.  He’s showing others the importance of baptism and renewal. This is the start of his ministry to lead the people to God.  In the bond of baptism, God has also made known His commitment and acknowledgement of Jesus. God responds from heaven “This is my son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

Baptism is a beautiful thing, and as Christians, we need to remember that bond we have with God every day!
