Receive God's Warm Love Through Reflection

The shepherd and his sheep

on April 19, 2013

“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff—they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” -Psalm 23

What is a shepherd? Why does God call us sheep?

Sheep are dumb, dirty, timid, helpless, tend to wander, noisy, and need a leader. As humans, we constantly stray from God, prone to sin, and forget God’s wisdom. Our lives can get messed up.

The shepherd is a kind and good protector and leader. He’s not like a pharaoh who wants power and possessions. He’s a selfless leader who wants to genuinely take care of his sheep. He keeps us safe, helps us follow the right path, and disciplines us like a child needing direction. He’s always watching out for his sheep. He’s someone we can always trust.

God is our ultimate shepherd. He’s always here for us, and we don’t have to be afraid. Let us turn to our ultimate shepherd and ask for guidance and love. God will provide for all of our needs; he even prepares a special table for each one of us, even in the presence of enemies. God loves us so much!

May we find God in every part of life and let Him guide us along the right path.  Thank you, God, for being our shepherd when we are dumb and sinful sheep!
