Receive God's Warm Love Through Reflection

A big heart open to God

on September 22, 2013

“When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.” -Acts 4:13

“All the believers were one in heart and mind.” -Acts 4:32

Today’s message at mass was empowering. The priest was filled with the love of God and wanted to share it with us. You could tell he was speaking from the heart. 🙂

The new pope had been in an interview, titled “A Big Heart Open to God”. In this interview, the pope speaks beautiful words, especially regarding the church and the people.

The pope says that we are all sinners. That God chooses us, even ordinary sinners to dwell with him. Christ called Matthew, a materialistic tax collector, to follow him with open arms. And likewise, God opens his heart to all of us.

The church sometimes focuses on things, like abortion and divorce, but it needs to focus on people and loving all.  Don’t focus on treating that person narrowly, as if it’s only importance is a disease, like high cholesterol. Rather let go of classifying and just focus on healing, forgiveness, leading that person closer to Christ.

“I see clearly,” the pope continues, “that the thing the church needs most today is the ability to heal wounds and to warm the hearts of the faithful; it needs nearness, proximity. I see the church as a field hospital after battle. It is useless to ask a seriously injured person if he has high cholesterol and about the level of his blood sugars! You have to heal his wounds. Then we can talk about everything else. Heal the wounds, heal the wounds…. And you have to start from the ground up.”

“The church sometimes has locked itself up in small things, in small-minded rules. The most important thing is the first proclamation: Jesus Christ has saved you. And the ministers of the church must be ministers of mercy above all.”

“A person once asked me, in a provocative manner, if I approved of homosexuality. I replied with another question: ‘Tell me: when God looks at a gay person, does he endorse the existence of this person with love, or reject and condemn this person?’ We must always consider the person. Here we enter into the mystery of the human being. In life, God accompanies persons, and we must accompany them, starting from their situation. It is necessary to accompany them with mercy. When that happens, the Holy Spirit inspires the priest to say the right thing.”

This is a change from some of the Catholic church’s teachings on condemning certain people. God loves EVERYONE, not just a few. So the church should also love the gays, the criminals, the divorced, etc…

What a powerful thought! That God loves us all and is always calling us back to Him.

Remember that God has a big open heart! Draw closer to Him and dwell in His love and mercy.
