“It has always been my belief that a pet owner has a special responsibility to do everything that can be done to make the pet’s life as fulfilling and peaceful as possible. That responsibility is yours the moment you make the choice to take an animal into your life. Indeed, just was with children, once the choice to assume responsibility for another life has been made, it can be carried out only one way if it is to have any chance of producing maximum results: all the way.” – Larry Levin, author of “Oogy”
I’ve been reading Oogy by Larry Levin, and it’s such a sweet touching story of him and his family rescuing a pit bull that was used as “bait” in dog-fighting. I just don’t understand how and why people can be so cruel to animals (and humans too!). But Larry says that as a pet owner (and as a person in general) we should treat animals kindly. We have special responsibilities to bring joy, comfort, and peace to our pets, just like we would with our children and even ourselves. We should take care of them fully and go above and beyond, or “all the way”.
This month I have a new member in my household – we took in a stray cat who was outside and skinny and wounded. He is such a sweet loving cat and deserves a loving home, just like every pet and child should deserve. This Christmas, please pray for all the animals in the world, that they may be given some love and food and hope for a good life.
